Fourth edition of “Human Rights and Taxes” law clinic ends

The fourth edition of an intervention and education programme operated by the HFHR, the law clinic “Human Rights and Taxes”, has ended. During the academic year, 11 law students have attended the clinic’s weekly seminars held at the Foundation’s headquarters.

Students participating in the classes had an opportunity to review the individual tax law cases notified to the Foundation for possible human rights violations, draft submissions and intervention letters and observe judicial hearings in tax cases, among other things. For some of the students, the clinic activities were the first occasion to actually practice the law.

“At university classes, law students learn about the law and its theoretical foundations. Still, lectures in theory do not show how the law works in practice, how the general and universally applicable rules affect lives of individual citizens, how the rules shape their rights and obligations in relationships with governmental and administrative authorities. By taking part in the Foundation’s work the students can discover this fascinating though sometimes grim world”, observes Robert Krasnodębski of Weil, Gotshal & Manges, a lawyer conducting pro bono classes at the clinic.

All law students are welcome to apply to the fifth edition of the law clinic “Human Rights and Taxes”. Recruitment starts at the end of September and in early October 2014.

We are still keen on accepting cases related to the broadly understood tax law which involve potential violations of rights and freedoms enshrined in the Polish Constitution. In cases which concern widespread violations of tax law or carry ground-breaking significance for the practical application of tax law, students and HFHR lawyers will take action and intervene to solve concrete problems faced by individual taxpayers.
