HFHR lawyer awarded

Dominika Bychawska-Siniarska, director of the Observatory of Media Freedom in Poland has been awarded the Article 54 Journalists’ Prize by the Polish Journalists Association.

Article 54 of Poland’s Constitution stipulates that “The freedom to express opinions, to acquire and to disseminate information shall be ensured to everyone. Preventive censorship of the means of social communication and the licensing of the press shall be prohibited”.

The board decided to award Dominika Bychawska-Siniarska for her “consistent efforts for the freedom of speech made through the institution which offers legal aid to any journalist, blogger and citizen when they are subject to persecution for their publications”.

Another winner is Krystyna Kurczab-Redlich, a writer and foreign correspondent, awarded for her “insightful writing, showing the humanitarian demise and the dilapidation of citizens’ rights in Russia and Chechnya”. Father Ludwik Wiśniewski, an academic priest, received a prize for “breaking the taboo, wisdom and his courage to exchange opinions with high Church officials in Poland”.

“By naming the laureates worthy of the prizes we wish to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day announced by the General Assembly of the United Nations, May 3, the Day of Free Press, endorsed by Reporters Without Borders, April 20 as well as our national Constitution Day, May 3”, said Grzegorz Cydejko, president of the Association’s Warsaw chapter, during the awards ceremony.

The competition’s award board includes, among others, Jacek Żakowski, Paweł Sito and Jerzy Kisielewski. The first edition of the competition was held under the patronage of the President of Constitutional Court, Professor Andrzej Rzepliński.
