Inaugural meeting of Selection Panel of Václav Havel Human Rights Prize. Marek Antoni Nowicki of HFHR among Panel’s members

The inaugural meeting of the Selection Panel of the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize was held in Prague on 26th August. Three nominations for the Prize will be be announced on this occasion. The final decision on the prize winner will be made by the Panel on 29 September 2013 in Strasbourg.

The Prize, launched this year, will be awarded each year by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in partnership with the Václav Havel Library and the Charta 77 Foundation to reward outstanding civil society action in the defence of human rights in Europe and beyond. Nominees may be individuals or non-governmental institutions active in the defence of human rights.

The Selection Panel includes six independent experts with recognised moral standing in the field of human rights, among them Marek Antoni Nowicki, former President and current Board member of the HFHR and former presiding member of the UNMIK Human Rights Advisory Panel.

Besides Mr Nowicki, other Panel members are: Jean-Claude Mignon, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Thomas Hammarber, former Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, František Janouch, Chairman of the Board of the Charta 77 Foundation, Nuala Mole, recognised human rights lawyer, founder of the London-based AIRE Centre, Martin Palouš, Head of the Vaclav Havel Library Foundation in Prague and Christos Pourgourides, former Cypriot MP and member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
