Invitation to “Artistic freedom in practice” workshops held in Lublin and Poznań

We invite our readers to take part in the workshops “Artistic freedom in practice”. The workshops aim to identify the main legal threats to artistic freedom in Poland and discuss various means of safeguarding it from restrictions.

The workshops will contribute to improving the legal awareness among members of cultural sectors and are targeted primarily at local artists, staff of cultural institutions and officials responsible for cultural policy.

The workshops take place in Lublin, on 25 November 2014, between 12 pm and 5 pm, and in Poznań, on 27 November 2014, between 10 am and 4 pm. They are organised in partnership with The Labirynt Gallery of Lublin and Teatr Ósmego Dnia of Poznań.

The following issues will be up for discussion during the workshops: international standards and constitutional safeguards enabling the protection of artistic freedom; legal regulations which may be used to stifle artistic freedom; and also legal remedies protecting artists from interference with artistic freedom, and tips on how to respond to unjustified attempts to limit artistic freedom.

The workshops will be held by Dominika Bychawska-Siniarska and Dorota Głowacka from the Foundation’s Observatory of the Freedom of Media in Poland. Since 2008, the Observatory has been monitoring threats to artistic freedom and conducting numerous legal actions in this area.

Please send the workshops application form before 23 September to d.glowacka@prawaczlowieka.pl. The number of places available is limited. Detailed information may be obtained from Dorota Głowacka on 504 080 119.

The project “Artistic freedom in practice” is implemented in partnership with the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Warsaw.
