Opinion statement of coalition for Civic Monitoring of Candidates for Judges

“We think that the adopted procedure deprived the parliamentarians and members of the public of an opportunity to learn about a candidate’s personal qualities and their professional achievements or dispel any concerns related to a candidate”, reads the statement of a coalition of organisations conducting the Civic Monitoring of Candidates for Judges of the Constitutional Tribunal.

The document discussed the nomination of Dr Grzegorz Jędrejek, who was chosen as a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal during the Sejm’s session on 24 February 2017.

The organisations emphasise in their statement that Dr Jęderejk’s nomination was made only a few days after the expiry of the term for the submission of candidates. Moreover, the session of the Sejm Committee for Justice and Human Rights offered no actual opportunity to talk to the candidate or ask him questions. “This manner in which the Sejm proceeded is inappropriate given the dignity of the office of a Constitutional Tribunal judge. It also proves that the deputies who proposed and voted for the candidate treat him instrumentally”, reads the statement.
