Rights of children with mental disability

Innovating European lawyers to advance the rights of children with disabilities.

In 2016, Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights in cooperation with Mental Disability Advocacy Centre carried out a training project for lawyers titled „The participation of children with disabilities in judicial proceedings – the legal standards and professional skills”.
Project’s aim was to enhance legal professionals’ abilities to represent children with disabilities in the judicial proceedings. In that way, the project aimed at widening the access of children with disabilities to the justice system. During the training, its participants gained knowledge on the kinds of human rights violations which children with mental disabilities are most prone to, the international and national standards on human rights protection and accessible legal remedies. The participants also gained skills which allow them to build innovative and effective line of argumentation in cases which concern rights of children with disabilities.
The training was a part of the project „Innovating European lawyers to advance rights of children with disabilities” coordinated by the Mental Disabilities Advocacy Centre and financed from the European Union funds.
