Results of the Fourth Competition for the Best Master Thesis on Human Rights

The Competition’s award committee chaired by Professor Ewa Łętowska granted one third place award and two special prizes. The laureate of the third place award is Tomasz Dudek, graduate of the Institute of International Relations, the University of Warsaw, who wrote his master’s thesis entitled “The methods of interpretation of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms on the example of cases concerning discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation”.

The competition’s fourth edition attracted 28 graduates representing 13 different universities from across Poland. The theses covered the following academic fields: law, sociology, administration, international relations, political science, Russian philology, culture studies and European studies. The competition was organised with support of the Trust for Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe.

After reading and discussing the theses over two sessions, the Award Committee selected the laureates of the fourth Competition. The Committee’s decision was not to award the first and second place prizes. Instead, the Committee granted one third place award and two special prizes.

The laureate of the third place award is Tomasz Dudek, who wrote his master thesis in the Institute of International Relations, the University of Warsaw. The supervisor of his thesis was Professor Janusz Symonides. The Award Committee appreciated the topic of the thesis: an up-to-date and original choice, closely linked to human rights. The author displayed his thorough legal knowledge and extensive writing skills in an in-depth analysis of the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights.

Moreover, the Committee granted a special prize to the thesis entitled “Pharmacists conscience clause”, authored by Karolina Miksa from the Faculty of Law and Administration of Jagiellonian University. The thesis was supervised by Professor Włodzimierz Wróbel.

The second special prize went to Katarzyna Kmonk, also a graduate of the Faculty of Law and Administration of Jagiellonian University, for her master’s thesis entitled “Humanitarian intervention law versus state sovereignty”. The supervisor of the thesis was Dr. Marcin Marcinko.

We extend our congratulations to the laureates of the Fourth Competition and we thank all the graduates for participation in the contest. We hope that all of you further involve yourself and develop academically, committing to the field of human rights discussed in your theses.
