10 October: European Day against the Death Penalty

Wednesday, 10 October 2012 marks the 10th European Day against the Death Penalty. This is not only a day to celebrate the abolishment of the capital penalty in Poland, but also a day to think about the countries where people are legally executed (such as Belarus, the US or China).

The Horizon Group Against the Death Penalty, a satellite organisation of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, and the Association of Young Journalists Polis launches the commemoration of the Day in Poland. Horizon Group, Polis and Amnesty International invite everybody to a street stand at Nowy Świat 48, Warsaw, to discuss why death is not justice. The stand will be open between 11 am and 5 pm.

At 6.30 pm, the Horizon Group and the Student Research Club Human Rights Forum will hold the debate “How to work with long-term prisoners to be able to live with them after they leave prison?” The event will take place at A3 room at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Warsaw. The debate is organised in response to the media reports on the Polish prisoners sentenced to death in the 1980s whose sentences have been commuted to prison terms of 25 years and who soon are expected to be released.
